Western Australia City Uses Highly Effective Trash Nets to Capture Debris Coming Through Drainage System

In Australian City of Kwinana, just outside of Perth Western Australia, hundreds of kilos of waste have been stopped from polluting the water, By installing just two drainage nets in March 2018, the city has already stopped 370 kg of trash from polluting local waterways. The entire project including design, manufacture, installation, and civil works cost under $20,000.

Sometimes the smartest solutions are the simplest ones. These strong nets are placed at the end of drainage pipes to catch plastic and trash before it washes into rivers and oceans. They don’t cost much, they don’t need heavy maintenance, but the impact is huge.

Not only are the nets keeping the area cleaner, but they’re also saving the city money by reducing the labor needed to collect scattered rubbish by hand. This means the investment will pay for itself quickly while improving efficiency, safety, and the health of the reserves.

We believe more communities around the world can benefit from simple eco-engineering like this. Imagine if every storm water drain had one of these how much cleaner our planet would be!
